Mark your calendars, there’s more Channing Tatum headed your way! Next month on February 8th the movie Side Effects will hit theaters, starring Jude Law, Rooney Mara, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and a southern favorite, Channing Tatum (ok, maybe we’re slightly biased because he recently opened a joint down here in New Orleans, Saints and Sinners, making him more locally accessible in some small way, but did you SEE Magic Mike?!). And really, it’s not just because of Mr. Tatum — I love a good suspense thriller, and this one comes from director Steven Soderbergh, the same guy that brought you Contagion, so you know it’s not just some slap-dash piece.
The basic premise: Rooney Mara‘s character is trying to cope with anxiety issues and her husband’s impending release from prison (enter Channing Tatum), and gets introduced to a new wonder-drug called Ablixa that’s prescribed by her therapist, Jude Law. But there are side effects. And not your average “may cause excessive drowsiness or disorientation” side effects — the film is billed as a pharmaceutical thriller for a reason. And that may be one of the bits that piques my curiosity most: I grew up in a household of (what I considered to be) overmedication, and as an adult harbor a pretty heavy fear of pill-popping; the only marketed drugs you’ll find around here is OTC junk for headaches and the random cold/flu outbreak. I recognize the necessity in some cases, but am terrified of the ease with which problems can be swept under the rug with the scrawl of a script pad, and the whole pharmaceutical machine behind it. I mean, have you listened to some of the side effects on drug commercials lately?! Eegads, no thanks, I’ll deal with my achy back and acid reflux in a more holistic way thankyouverymuch.
Anyway, I digress — the point is, this movie’s kind of a three-fer: good cast, solid director, and a subject matter/genre that I’m into sitting in a dark theater and digging through. The trailer doesn’t reveal a whole lot, but that’s sort of the point of a good thriller: you get the setup, but have to go through the journey of watching it to really reveal the storyline (still not really sure where Catherine Zeta-Jones slides into the storyline, but she’s definitely in there). Check out the trailer here for yourself:
So I did some nails up in anticipation of the suspenseful moodiness: in alternating nails, I used HITS Zeus (the grey one) and OPI Die Another Day to lay down some moody grey holo and metal red on my nails, then painted in the title of the movie, a pink Ablixa pill, and a general red cross (that was also used on the promo posters). Forgive the dark pictures, it was raining and dark all day so I did the best with what we’re dealing with around here.

Channing. Tatum. Nuff said!!!
CHANNING TATUM. plus I have those same fears of over-prescription and -medication so the plot premise looks interesting!
Tatum!! And I like Spielberg movies
Because I hear a lot about the pharm industry and it kind of freaks me out … and also because Channing Tatum. Lol
After watching Contagion, I assumed I would be absolutely paranoid by the possibility of a deadly outbreak. However, the cast, the subject matter and the shortage of dialogue that is absolutely refreshing at times, I now find myself surfing over to it whenever it’s playing on cable.
With the quick turn by many to medicate for this reason or that, the side effects often seem so much worse. Ablixa sounds like oblivious, so I’m interested to see how the script plays out.
Same director, Jude Law, thiller. I’m in.
I saw this trailer and it had me on the edge of my seat! Looks so thrilling from start to end.
also… I have adored Channing Tatum since FOREVER … LOL
I’m excited to see it because I like Jude Law!

I am excited to see Side Effects because I love thrillers and have a background in science.
Prescription drugs is a really hot issue for me, not so much for personal reasons but because I am pursuing a psych degree and it’s something that I have strong opinions about. Also Soderberg and Jude Law are just wonderful. Thanks!
