This was done with the sponging technique and lightly transparent polishes so it could be applied in multiple stages and still bleed nicely (unlike a thick solid color).  Did the base in Sinful Colors Purple Diamond (2 coats), then started in with Sinful Colors Fiji.  With the makeup sponge I dabbed near to the top of the nail down to the tip once, then again starting a little bit lower, then a third time a little further down the nail yet.

So at that point it’s 2 coats of the base and 3 coats of the second purple starting at different points on the nail.  There’s a little overlap as you dab the nails but that’s sort of the point, you just want them to bleed together as easily as possible.

For the tips I went in with Sinful Colors Let’s Talk and did another couple of gradient layers.  Purrrrrdy purple. (and again, no cleanup yet on this, was right before I went to bed and just couldn’t be bothered.)

Those nails are adolrable…Fresh and clean design for spring. How do you make the colors fade into each other???

It’s actually pretty easy, just takes some practice til you get the right feel for it. There’s a link to a better explanation up at the top of the post, but basically you put a dab of polish on a makeup sponge and then start splotching it on the part of the nail where you want to create a gradient effect. If you’re trying it out for the first time I’d suggest using a slightly transparent polish (instead of the really thick opaque ones) so it’s a little easier to play with and layer.

holy crap. I’m kinda freaking out. we have like the SAME HANDS. our ring fingers are very similar. I’ve never seen someone with hands/nails so close to mine! here is my nail set on flickr.. so you can see. WOW! http://www.flickr.com/photos/beatrizjarvis/sets/72157618392851354/

You should do video tutorials for these. Even if it’s just a camera over your shoulder. And what do you use for cleanup? My fingers always still get stained.

I’ll see what I can do! For the cleanup I just use those pointy q-tips that you can get in the cosmetic section of the drugstore — soak the end up real good with polish remover and then just work your way around the nail bed. Do yourself a favor though and put your topcoat on FIRST so that if you rub a little too close to the nail you’re not immediately removing the polish.
